I've spent a few decades lurching around the New York City arts and media worlds — as an aspirant and a hanger-on, as a journalist and an occasional critic, and as a friend and a fan. Every now and then I was asked to write something about the arts; every now and then I wrote something about the arts because I felt like it.
So the reviews, essays, and interviews that I've stashed in this website are a record of a couple of decades' worth of adventures in the arts and the media, and of my reflections and observations about these worlds.
For what it's worth: I never wrote a regular column, and I never wrote for publication because I had to. I'd like to think that it's a plus that I did this writing free of commercial, let alone career, pressure, though I could be fooling myself. I'd also like to think that in my writing I sometimes combine the skills and responsiveness of a good critic with more practical experience than most critics have, though I could be fooling myself here too.
